About

The theme for ArtPrize at Cathedral Square 2014 is “HeARTbeat: The Pulse of Art & Life.”

The exhibition will focus on works that employ rhythm both as a formal compositional device and as subject matter. Rhythm is a constant dynamic force in our lives, connecting and coordinating a range of actions within each person. It has rightly been identified as one of the most important elements in the discipline of visual design and has been used by artists throughout the ages. We walk, talk, sing, tap our feet, and clap our hands, surrendering to the rhythms of life just as life moves through us; we may also choose to move to our own cadence. Our heartbeat is the arbiter and gentle reminder of our rhythmic involvement in all of life. We are interested in artists whose works convey a sense of heart and mind in art that celebrates the rhythms of community, nature and consciousness.

Welcome artists, volunteers and visitors!

Cathedral Square provides a unique, inviting and contemplative viewing environment. Located just a few blocks from the city center in the Heartside Neighborhood of Grand Rapids and anchored by the 125-year old Cathedral of Saint Andrew, art is exhibited both indoors (main gallery) and out.  Looking to the indoor space, floor-to-ceiling windows allow for an infusion of natural light, while an open floor plan gives visitors the opportunity to explore art and culture at their own pace. Outside, the square's gardens are an urban oasis featuring beautiful green space and pedestrian-friendly walkways.
