Happy August! Don’t worry, summer in Michigan is still here! Before gearing up for fall and the excitement of ArtPrize, celebrate your favorite events around the community this month which continue to embody an artistic, cultural summer experience.
Here is a short list of art and community events throughout August happening in, around and beyond the Heartside Neighborhood:
Fri, August 1: The Market on First Fridays. Featuring a gallery and shop hop that exhibits artwork at a variety of indoor sites. Meanwhile, the sidewalks will be flooded with artist vendors, performances and entertainment along South Division (between Fulton and Cherry). This FREE event showcases the work of local artists and artisans with a wide selection of handmade goods. Heartside District, South Division St., 5-9pm
Fri, August 1: Summer Soirée. Dance around Cyril Lixenberg's "Steel Water" sculpture while taking in views of the Grand River on the patio between the JW Marriott and Oldtown Riverfront Building. This is a FREE event, open to those 21 years and older. Featuring music from DJ Curtis Avison. JW Marriott, 235 Louis NW., 8:30pm
Fri, August 1: Bring Your Own Beamer. Bring Your Own Beamer (BYOB) is a FREE one-night art exhibition featuring projection-based artworks at UICA. Food and drink will be available for puchase. Brought to you by GR Current, Vizidef, BlueWater Technologies, and Boxed Water. Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, 8pm-midnight
Sat, August 2: Slightly Obsessive II. Join LaFontsee Galleries (LG) for a journey into the “Slightly Obsessive”. View a collection of meticulously crafted art with countless notches, stitches, nicks, cuts, circles & lines - created by artists who are totally immersed in their craft. Coinciding on the same day LG is hosting “Art and All That Jazz”, LIVE JAZZ music from 6-8pm. Exhibition is running through August 30th. Everyone is Welcome, Dress is Casual, Admission is FREE! Sun, August 3, 10, 17, 24, & 31: Fulton Street ARTisans Market. Grown since 2005 to be a venue for all kinds of arts, from acrylic to fiber to crafts, all items handmade by local Michigan artists. FREE to enjoy! Fulton St. Artisans Market, every Sunday, 11am-3pm
Tues/Wed, August 5/6, 12/13, 19/20, & 26/27: Drop In Open Studio. During normal business hours, residents or out-of-town guests can bring their art and craft projects to work on. Various amenities will be available for use, including a studio room, an on-site reference library, specialty tools and equipment, etc. A knowledgeable staff will be on-site to answer questions and help with projects. Inspirations of Art Studio, every Tuesday & Wednesday, 11am-7pm.
Wed, August 6: CIC Dinner and a Movie Presents: The Cardinal. Join us for dinner and a movie, as we view and discuss inspirational films that illustrate how great faith can transform our own life and the lives of those around us. The movie will be shown from 2:30-4:30 pm, with dinner and discussion following the movie. The film’s rich storyline explores interfaith marriage, abortion, racism and war. Catholic Information Center, 360 Division Ave. S., Ste. 2A, 2:30-6pm. Cost: $15/person.
Wed, August 6, 13, 20, & 27: GR Makers Weekly Social. An open community lab incorporating elements of a machine shop, workshop and design studio. In this FREE community event, members work on projects that range from industrial to fine arts. Three key goals are enabling personal expression, providing versatile education and supporting education. GR Makers, 401 Hall St., every Wednesday, 8pm-midnight
Wed, August 6,13, 20, & 27: Coffee with Creators. An early morning casual meetup for anyone interested in technology, design and business, on all levels. Stop by The Factory, grab some Rowsters on the house, and stay connected with your community. The Factory, every Wednesday, 7:30-8:30am
Thur, August 7 & 14: GRAM on the Green. GRAM on the Green returns this summer for another season of exciting live outdoor music! Make the most of your summer evenings and join GRAM, Downtown Grand Rapids Inc., and the Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Department for Thursday nights filled with FREE outdoor live music, FREE museum general admission, food trucks, a cash bar, and more. Thur, August 14-Sun, August 17: 2014 USRowing Masters National Championship Regatta. The Grand Rapids Rowing Association and West Michigan Sports Commission are pleased to host the 2014 USRowing Masters National Championship rowing regatta in Grand Rapids. This FREE event will bring nearly 2,000 rowers and more than 6,000 spectators to Riverside Park for four days of exciting rowing races. Riverside Park, Thursday-Sunday, 8am-5pm
Thur, August 21: Taste of East Grand Rapids. The Taste of East Grand Rapids will feature tasty samples from many Gaslight Village area restaurants. Also offers family activities including live music, a free Kid's Fun Zone, and free bike valet parking. Admission to The Taste of East Grand Rapids is free and food tickets will cost $1 each. Fri-Sun, August 22-24: Yassou! Greek Cultural Festival. The event is an annual celebration of the Greek heritage featuring an assortment of authentic Greek food, drinks, shopping and entertainment for the entire family, including live music and dancing with the well-known Detroit band The Levendes on Friday and Saturday. Sat/Sun, August 23/24: Dahlia Show. During this FREE event, marvel at the variety of colors, shapes and sizes of dahlia flowers. Find a flower the size of a dinner plate and a pompon dahlia that forms a perfect sphere. View creative floral arrangements. Dahlia Society members will be on hand to answer questions and provide tips on how to grow these beautiful flowers. Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park, Saturday & Sunday, 12-5pm
Sat, August 30: Quilts and Their Stories. Over 150 quilts are displayed inside the 12,000 square foot facility located in downtown Coopersville. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday during the quilt show, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and for special events and groups with reservations.
